Nordic Design For Breakfast

French yoghurt brand Yoplait (Norge) has just announced a packaging collaboration with hot young designer Esra Røise, a Norwegian freelance illustrator who studied at Einar Granum School of Art, and at the Academy of the Arts in Oslo. Yoplait wanted to challenge its usual approach to packaging graphics, and asked Røise to treat the pot of its new ‘Double 0%’ yoghurt as a canvas. Røise explains her approach: ‘I did not place too much emphasis on the ingredients in my design, despite the fact that the yoghurt contains lots of berries and natural sweetener. It is a brave and great choice of Yoplait to let the packaging stand strong as a visual element.’

Røise has become the darling of the design world in recent years, with projects for Vogue, Estée Lauder and Stella McCartney under her belt, and recent commissions for Superga and Oslo Runway, showcasing her distinctive illustrative style. ‘I'll start off drawing by hand, with pencil and pen’ she explains, ‘then maybe add some watercolour and/or ink before I scan the drawing and play around with it in Photoshop. Recently I have started using digital embellishments in a greater scale than before, but my starting point is almost always analogue.’
