Care for a Moomin with Your Coffee?

A new café chain, known as Mumin Kaffe, is set to open a new series of Moomin-themed coffee shops. Starting in the Finnish capital Helsinki, and with plans afoot for roll out to other European countries, Mumin Kaffes will be the first Moomin-branded cafés specifically designed to cater to children’s needs.

The concept of child-friendly coffee shops came about when Finnish journalist Sanna Kiiski decided there was an unsatisfied demand for meeting places for adults, but where children would feel warmly welcomed too. She established a partnership with restaurateur Mehdi Younes, and the child-friendly café concept quickly picked up momentum. Eventually, a licensing agreement was signed between the duo and Moomin Characters Oy Ltd, (the owner of the iconic Finnish characters conceived by Finnish author Tove Jansson), and the first Mumin Kaffe will open on 21 October, in Helsinki, followed by a second in Stockholm, Sweden, just before Christmas.

Starting next month, Finnish video blogger Maija Ilmoniemi will be producing a video blog that follows Mumin Kaffe’s story.
